Notices to mariners: Silloth

Every Notice to Mariners for the Port of Silloth, with its status. At this port most of the notices said to be in force are not held, so read the warning below before you sail.

This website is not a warning channel

Urgent navigational warnings go out by VHF and to HM Coastguard for broadcast. They do not go out by website. If something is happening now, a danger has appeared, a mark has failed, a channel has silted or a vessel is in trouble, you will hear it on VHF or from the Coastguard. Listen out. Call the harbour office.

This page is the register, the archive and the reference copy. It is never the primary means of telling you about something happening now.

How notices work here

A notice to mariners is a written instruction or warning issued by the harbour authority to people navigating the harbour. Notices for the Port of Silloth are issued by FJ Ports (Silloth) Ltd. Notices for the Port of Fleetwood are issued by the other authority and are kept separate, because these are two separate harbour authorities 60 miles apart. A notice for one port does not apply to the other. See the Fleetwood notices.

Each notice carries a number, a year, a subject, the date it was issued and the name of the person who signed it. Where a notice replaces or cancels an earlier one, it says so, and the earlier one moves to the archive.

Notices issued by Associated British Ports before 18/09/2026 and still in force on that date remain in force. Where such a notice names Associated British Ports, an Associated British Ports job title or an Associated British Ports telephone number, read it as naming FJ Ports (Silloth) Ltd. Those notices are being reissued in the new authority's name. Until a notice is reissued, the version in this register is the version that applies, and it is displayed with a covering statement on the same page as the notice itself.

The consolidated Notice to Mariners No. 01 of 2026 lists what this authority holds and treats as in force at the transfer.

What the statuses mean

Every notice in the register carries one of four statuses, and there are only these four. Nothing appears here without one.

In force

The best current reading is that the notice is live at the transfer date. Comply with it.

Expired

The notice lapsed on its own terms, usually because it cancelled itself on a date written into it. It is kept in the archive and is never shown as current.

Superseded

A later notice cancelled it, or reissued it under a later number, so the older number is spent. The replacing notice is named. Kept for the record.

Named as in force, not held

Another notice, one that we do hold, names this notice as being in force. We do not have it. It is published nowhere, it did not come across in the handover records, and its contents are unknown to us. We have asked Associated British Ports for it. If a notice in this state might affect you, contact the harbour office before you sail.

This does not mean the notice is being withheld, and it is not a decision anybody took. It means a document exists somewhere, another notice says it binds you, and we cannot produce it. A mariner is better served by knowing there is a gap than by a clean list that pretends there is not.

The register

Notices carried over from the outgoing authority are marked as not yet released for publication: the register records them, and the documents themselves are being reissued.

Two things the list will not tell you on its own. Some notices run out rather than being replaced: a sluicing programme is spent when its last date passes, and a notice reporting a defective mark holds good only until the mark is restored. Every notice carried over from Associated British Ports is being reissued in the new authority's name.

How to be told about a new notice

Notices affecting charts and Admiralty publications are also reported to the UK Hydrographic Office so that charts are corrected.

Named as in force, not held

Read this before you sail to Silloth

The most recent notice at this port prints its own list of the notices in force at Silloth. We hold one of the notices on that list. The other five carry the status named as in force, not held. Among them are navigation marks, navigation waypoints and hatches closed and secured. Their contents are not known to us. We have asked Associated British Ports for all of them.

Navigation marks and navigation waypoints are not administrative housekeeping. If you are bringing a vessel into Silloth, contact the harbour office before you sail and ask what those notices require. See the contact page.

Archive

Expired and superseded notices are kept in the register with their dates and the reason they ended. Nothing is deleted, because the trail of what replaced what is part of the record.
